ОтветитьУдалитьThank you, Yana, for your comments. I guess that Lehmann's 'Dusty Answer' is a very interesting reference here. The original quote was: "Initially, she thought the prose “too full, too cloying” but with “redeeming shades of Dusty Answer” (which I wouldn’t have thought of at all)". The novel of R. Lehmann was about a girl, Judith Earle, her upbringing and romantic relations (sometimes very tangled). Closer to the end Judith goes to Girton College (remember "alternative life" of Briony?), where her adventures continued. According to wiki, "With the exception of Alfred Noyes, most contemporary reviews concentrated on what was perceived as the author's unhealthy preoccupation with sex.[4] In her memoir The Swan in the Evening, Lehmann states 'It was discussed, and even reviewed, in certain quarters as the outpourings of a sex-maniac'. The Evening Standard cited Dusty Answer and Alec Waugh's The Loom of Youth as being a 'corrupting influence' on the young. The novel triggered a literary scandal and came to be regarded as an epitome of the Zeitgeist." I guess, there are a lot more parallels with 'Dusty Answer' than I see now.

ОтветитьУдалитьYana, thank you! Just wanted to point out that Nymphenburg manufactory is in Germany (in Munich), not in China.
