Dear all,

here are some comments on Chapter ten.


the Latin for next -- tunc
an Old English king attempting to turn back the tide -- Canute (Cnut)
the smallest pig in the litter -- a runt
the hounds pursuing the fox -- a hunt
the flat-bottomed boats on the Cam by Grantchester meadow -- punts.

“There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.” -- Briony quotes a song which goes on with (according to one version):

"There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.
I dunno why she swallowed that fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly -
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird
etc"
